Fans were left bewildered at the ending of the Asuka vs. Mickie James match during this past Monday’s WWE RAW.

The ending of the match was certainly a controversial one. Asuka locked in her signature ‘Asuka Lock’ and the referee would stop the match without James tapping. The referee would then deem James unable to continue, resulting in Asuka retaining.

WWE has since released an official statement on the bout.

Realizing that this could be her last chance at a championship, Mickie James left it all in the ring against The Empress of Tomorrow. But although Mickie James was ready for Asuka, Asuka was also ready for her. The Raw Women’s Champion locked on the Asuka Lock, and despite James’ best efforts to fight out, the referee ruled her unable to continue and awarded the match to Asuka.” the WWE said in a statement.

It appears as though James suffered an injury during the match which ultimately resulted in it being stopped early. WWE legends Mick Foley and Lance Storm believe James suffered a shoulder injury.

Lance Storm was first to comment on the finish “Hope @MickieJames is okay. I think the ref said her shoulder popped out. #RAW”.

Mick Foley later added, “I’m hearing that @MickieJames may have injured her shoulder in tonight’s #Raw match – which would explain the quick ending to the match. If true, I’m wishing Mickie a quick and complete recovery…and hoping she gets another shot at the title.”
