WWE referee botched the ending to the recent Asuka vs. Mickie James match on RAW.

The ending of the match was certainly a controversial one. Asuka locked in her signature ‘Asuka Lock’ and the referee would stop the match without James tapping. The referee would then deem James unable to continue, resulting in Asuka retaining the RAW Women’s Championship.

PWInsider has since reported that the finish of the match was supposed to be James tapping out to the Asuka Lock. However, the referee accidentally rang the bell early and then told the ring announcer to say that Asuka won the match because James could not continue.

James was actually fine and was not injured whatsoever. James’ elite selling skills caused WWE officials to believe she was out of it so the referee was given instructions in his ear to end the match.

Furthermore, Wrestling News reports that WWE are looking to capitalize on the controversy and book a rematch between Asuka and James in the near future.
