Women’s PW takes a look back at the six times women competed at WWE’s ‘The Great American Bash’ pay-per-view event.
Last week the WWE announced it was bringing back its ‘The Great American Bash’ event. This week’s July 1, 2020 edition of WWE NXT, as well as next week’s July 8, 2020 edition will officially be billed as ‘NXT: The Great American Bash’.
The Great American Bash was a pay-per-view event which originated in the NWA back in 1985 and was eventually taken over by the WCW. In 2004, after the WWE purchased the WCW, the organization begun hosting the event for six consecutive years. All six of those events featured female matches.
Here’s a brief look at six classic matches which previously featured on The Great American Bash.
2004: Sable def. Torrie Wilson
After teaming up at Wrestlemania 20 to defeat Stacy Keibler and Miss Jackie, Sable turned on her fellow playboy cover girl. The feud culminated in a singles match at the 2004 Bash, with the former WWE Women’s Champion Sable picking up the win under controversial circumstances.
2005: Melina def. Torrie Wilson
Things had been heating up between Torrie Wilson and Melina for weeks. With Candice Michelle as the special guest referee, the pair did battle in a bra and panties match with Melina picking up the victory.
2006: Ashley Massaro def. Michelle McCool, Jillian Hall & Kristal Marshall
Ashley Massaro, Michelle McCool, Jillian Hall and Kristal Marshall were clashing weekly on Smackdown. The general manager decided to throw the them into a four-way bra and panties match. Ultimately it was Ashley Massaro who emerged victorious.
2007: Candice Michelle def. Melina
Candice Michelle had captured the WWE Women’s Championship from Melina one month earlier at the ‘Vengeance: Night of Champions’ pay-per-view event. The former Diva Search contest was keen on proving to the world that the victory wasn’t a fluke. The pair put on a battle, but it was Candice who once again managed to emerge victorious.
2008: Michelle McCool def. Natalya
For years, the women on Smackdown had nothing to fight for. This changed in 2008 when Vickie Guerrero announced they’d be introducing the WWE Divas Championship. Michelle McCool and Natalya had earned the opportunity to fight for the inaugural belt and it was McCool who would come out on top, submitting Natalya to make history by becoming the first ever WWE Divas Champion.
2009: Michelle McCool def. Melina
One year after becoming the first ever WWE Divas Champion, Michelle McCool would attempt to make history once again by becoming the first woman to have held the Divas and Women’s Championship. Melina put up a tough fight, but with Alicia Fox in McCool’s corner, McCool was able to capitalize and pick up the win, making history for the second year in a row.
