Candice Michelle won the WWE Women’s Championship thirteen years ago today – June 24th, 2007.

Candice begun her WWE career in 2004 following an audition for the Diva Search. She debuted on the main roster with zero wrestling experience and was largely used in lingerie matches, bra and panties matches and pillow fights. She was notably WWE’s playboy cover girl in 2006 and fought against Torrie Wilson in a Playboy Pillow Fight at the marquee Wrestlemania 22 event on April 2, 2006.

Behind the scenes, Michelle had been working very hard to develop and master her in-ring game and fans begun to really notice the improvements she was making as compared to other women who came through from the Diva Search at the time.

In 2007, Michelle was overcome with emotion after her hard work finally paid off when she defeated Melina at Vengeance: Night of Champions on June 24, 2007 to capture her first WWE Women’s Championship. With this, Michelle made history by becoming the first diva search contestant to win a championship with the WWE.

Take a look at the historic moment in the video below.

Michelle would go on to defend the belt against Melina at The Great American Bash 2007, as well as against Beth Phoenix at Unforgiven 2007. She would eventually drop the belt to Phoenix in a rematch at No Mercy 2007.

The 41-year-old would then enter what was supposed to be a lengthy storyline against Phoenix, however this was cut short after Michelle suffered a devastating injury during a two out of three falls match against Phoenix. This injury effectively ended Michelle’s full-time wrestling career as she was never able to fully recover and reach the heights she once did.

To this day, Michelle is still recognized for her accomplishments with the organization and notably appeared on the WWE’s RAW Reunion show last year in which she pinned Kelly Kelly to capture the WWE 24/7 title, losing it to WWE Hall of Famer Alundra Blayze just seconds later.

Michelle is the example of a hard working woman who wasn’t satisfied with being seen as eye candy on TV, she fought hard to prove to the WWE Universe that she could be a great women’s wrestler. She succeeded and won the respect of the wrestling world whilst making history. It would be no surprise to one day see Candice Michelle inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.
